My dog saved me from a fall one night, and every night afterwards

My house, when I was little, was always a bit of a zoo. Our five dogs and two cats got along well, and were all very well trained, as my mom was/is a dog trainer. We had only Golden Retrievers and Border Collies, two of the smartest breeds, and specifically looked for some of the smartest ones. One of my dogs, a golden retriever by the name of Chaucer, always slept on my brother's bed, which was the lower bunk. I always tossed and turned a lot when I was sleeping, and one night I actually rolled out of bed. Chaucer managed to get off my brother's bed and break my fall (admittedly it wouldn't have been that big a deal if he didn't as long as I didn't land on my head or something). We were both completely uninjured after this, which I am thankful for.
The truly amazing thing, though, was that when I got in bed the next night, he jumped from the floor to the desk to the dresser to the bed, and then laid down along the edge of the bed so that I could no longer even get close to the edge if I tried. He made a wall or barrier for me so that I'd not fall off again. He kept doing this for a week, without encouragement, at which point I switched beds with my brother so that he wouldn't feel compelled to jump up onto the top bed. He never ever stopped being a barrier between me and a tumble, though.
Anyways, I was inspired by some of the comments on the "Today, somebody brought their dog to class," post to share my fond memory of my amazing dog. I hope you enjoyed his heroism as much as I did.
